SAPL Interclub Round 6 - 24 June 2012 - Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club       game details

The rain held back but there was no holding back on the pistes, for the final and deciding round of the 2011/12 season.

Host club Eastern Suburbs turned out in force and ended up reaping the rewards, winning the day with another dominating performance. In doing so, they also secured the season premiership in both Division I and Division II. Congratulations and well done!

Club d'Adelaide also finished the season strongly, taking out the 2nd, 3rd and 5th placings on the day (in Div I) and snaring second place overall. In contrast, the Prospect club were hard hit by the absence of many key players, due to injury, illness or swanning around Europe. Hence, despite holding a substantial lead throughout most of the season, they ended up dropping from equal first to third. The rest of the placings remained unchanged.

Similarly, in Division II, Gawler maintained a lead through the entire season, only to fall at the last hurdle. They finished second behind Eastern Suburbs and ahead of Port Noarlunga.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the 2011/12 season and to all those who have helped host and run these events in one way or another.

Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (24 June 2012)

SAPL State Triples Championship - 17 June 2012 - Club de Petanque d'Adelaide

The (rescheduled) 2011/12 SAPL State Triples Championship attracted a group of twelve committed triples teams who braved the elements at Club de Petanque d'Adelaide, on June 17, despite the absence of some of our regular competitors, for various reasons,

There were a number of novel combinations (with mixed-club teams making up about half the field) breaking some of the usual intra-club alliances and inter-club rivalries between players, for the day. This helped to keep it interesting.

The tournament was also remarkable in that the vast majority of teams in the field all seemed to be quite evenly matched. Hence, the competition was fierce throughout. Ultimately, no-one went home without at least one taste of defeat but neither did anyone go without at least one moment of victory.

Congratulations to Alexi, Craig and Tony, for an emphatic victory at the end (but with a few scares along the way). Well done also to Wendy, Anna and Deb for 'flying under the radar' all the way to the final. Thanks to all who participated, for the great spirit of sportsmanship and bonhomme that prevailed throughout the day.

SAPL Interclub Round 5 - 27 May 2012 - Club dePétanque d'Adelaide

An early onset of winter in Adelaide did not dampen enthusiasm or attendance for Round 5. 24 teams - the biggest turnout we've had for some years - were rewarded with patches of sunshine, a general absence of rain, a tasty meal, plenty of bonhomie and, of course, lots of excellent petanque.

The Eastern Suburbs club dominated the day's proceedings and they (quite literally) could not have done any better. In Division I, they earnt maximum points by taking out the top two positions. Then, to cap it off, their sole representative in Division II also came out as clear winners in that division.

Despite maintaining a healthy lead throughout the season so far, Prospect's grip on the top spot seems to be loosening. They enter the final round on a par with ESP, tied for first place. In third place, Club d'Adelaide are also well within striking distance, setting the scene for a hotly-contested three-way battle in Round 6. There is also a close contest for 5th and 6th between Port Noarlunga and Gawler, with the latter now holding a six point advantage.

Meanwhile, in Division II, neither of the first- and second-placed clubs fielded Div. II teams in Round 5. There were more points available this time because there were more teams, but the club that won had not appeared in this division before. The net result is a competition blown wide open. With a good enough performance in the final round, any one of the seven clubs could still take out the Div. II title!

Both championships are now well and truly up for grabs, with one round to go. Round 6 should be a cracker. It's time to rally the troops and make it a fitting finale to a great season.

SAPL Interclub Round 4 - 22 April 2012 - Adelaide Hills Pétanque Club       details

With the welcome shelter of the new Adelaide Hills proto-clubrooms, and the beautiful surroundings, Round 4 was the best attended round that we've had this season. It was a very successful and convivial day, with much more sunshine than rain.

In Div I, a number of new faces appeared amongst the top placed teams. Congratulations to Lionel Chazal and Mark Harris who (together with Louis Oltarczy) won the day in their first league appearance. Congratulations also to Tory McBride and Lionel Pujol (playing with Dave Ward), who overcame some strong opponents to reach their first League final. Another personal best of note was achieved by young Harvey Walker, together with Luke Randall (also a junior) and Rob Mitchell, who claimed a few impressive scalps too, on their way to a very creditable fourth place for the Gawler club.

In the points table, Prospect maintain the lead but Club d'Adelaide have gained ground on them, stepping into second place in the process (3 points ahead of Eastern Suburbs). At the other end of the table, Gawler were the team on the up, moving into fifth place ahead of Port Noarlunga.

Meanwhile, in Div II, a good turnout from host club Adelaide Hills saw them snare second place overall, behind Gawler who again won the day (as they did in the only other Div II event held so far this season).

SAPL State Doubles Championship - 18 March 2012 - Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club

Warm and sunny weather greeted the SAPL State Doubles Championships, held at the Eastern Suburbs Club.
The day was an all-round success, with an excellent atmosphere. All of the major Finals were of a high standard  and were closely-fought affairs -- good contests between the best teams and truly fitting climaxes in each of the three categories.

With just a couple of (epic) exceptions, the minor finals were more remarkable* for the way that they left so little doubt about who should be progressing to the major finals. Many were also notable for their brevity (which made for a relatively timely finish to the day).

Congratulations to Alexi and Iskender - Open Champions and clearly the most outstanding performers throughout the whole day.

Congratulations also to Anna and Wendy, who regained the Ladies crown.

Six out of thirteen (QF and SF) games with a margin of eleven or more; ten of thirteen won by at least eight!
I doubt we've seen a tournament quite like that before.

Coonawarra Clasic Clash Pétanque - Sat 11 & Sun 12 February 2012   results below    .pdf version

16th Coonawarra Vignerons Classisc Pétanque Tounament
(South Australian players and Clubs in blue)

With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, the Coonawarra Pétanque Club held its 16th Annual triples tournament last weekend of the 11th and 12th February 2012, with the Coonawarra Park as the venue for the competition, and played in almost ideal conditions over the two days

Organisers again had very good numbers of team entries, that saw 186 players competing in the “Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash” Pétanque Tournament, where all teams were pooled together in one competition and the event pitted the young against the seniors, women against men, the skilled against the less so and the experienced against the novice, - and everyone loved it! Laughter, high fives and fun abounded amongst the highs/lows of winning and losing - pétanque at its very best.

With 62 teams entered for the Saturday and Sunday competition, teams from Melbourne, Avoca, Adelaide, Apollo Bay, Newcastle and a good turn out of local teams attending, were all playing for over $5000 in cash and prizes.

“The attractive venue, seamless organization and generous sponsorship, brings some of the very best pétanque players in the land together along with the rank and file of passionate contenders. The Coonawarra Club deserve a lot of credit for staging and organising what is now probably the biggest triples tournament in Australia
said Ken Field from Avoca, a regular visitor to the tournament.

While all games were keenly contested and finals places competitively sought after, those who made it to the top were thoroughly deserving of doing so, and their success was very much a reflection of their levels of skill and perseverance.

The final of the tournament was a very tight and exciting affair, where the two favourite teams from Melbourne put on a superb display of skill and accuracy with the team from Weird Entertainers Pétanque Club (who were undefeated all weekend) defeating their St Kilda Pétanque Club rivals – Score: 13 – 7.

Successful local team of Andrew Jackman, Mark Heyn and Jean Paul Bouyer had a very good weekend and were placed 6th outright for the tournament, while Simon Fennell, Guy Detot, and friend Jean-Jacque De Lamoz finished in a respectable 16th place.

“The whole weekend has been beautiful and was enjoyed by all who came along. It was really good to see the local folk coming out and supporting the event, and many of our visitors have already said that they will come back, so next year could be even bigger again!”
said Guy Detot, President Coonawarra Pétanque Club.

SAPL Interclub Round 3 - 30 October 2011 - Pt Noarlunga

Round 3 saw a general spreading of the field in the interclub rankings. Prospect improved their lead over Eastern Suburbs, at the top of the table. Adelaide Hills lost ground against third-placed Club d'Adelaide, but moved away from fifth-placed Port Noarlunga. Meanwhile, Gawler's sole team (one more than FAB) finished in the points and pushed them ahead of FAB to outright sixth.

Note the almost perfect correlation between games won and final ranking, despite a few topsy-turvy results. A nice example of the ranking system doing exactly what it's supposed to. (OK, so there's one small anomaly. But when you get three teams that have won the first four out of four games, only two of them can be in the final. At least the other one finished third, which is probably how it should be.)

SAPL Interclub Round 2 - 25 September 2011 - Gawler

Perfect weather for Round 2, at Gawler, saw the margins reduced at both ends of the points table.
Eastern Suburbs gained on the leaders, Prospect, despite the latter once again providing the winning team for the day.  Meanwhile, Club d'Adelaide moved closer to them both - now well within striking distance for the top position.

At the other end of the table, things have become even tighter. Host club, Gawler, achieved their best ever result with teams placed 7th and 9th in Div I. This gives them 15pts as they draw level with FAB. Port Noarlunga also had two teams in the points, and have moved ahead of FAB to be within 6pts of fourth place. Adelaide Hills now face a struggle to maintain their hold on that position, as they scored a dismal 3pts from their solitary team.

Gawler also performed well in Division II, taking 1st and 3rd positions and setting the pace for the new season. Club d'Adelaide are in second place, with Port Noarlunga the only other team to have points on the board.

SAPL Interclub Round 1 - 28 August 2011 - Prospect

Fine and mild weather, a good turnout, and a draw that only saw one game between two teams from the same club made for an enjoyable, competitive and successful start to the new season.

After one round, the trends established last season are already apparent. Prospect has established a healthy lead from the outset, with Eastern Suburbs not too far behind. Adelaide Hills and the Club d'Adelaide are jostling for third place, with the former gaining the edge at this stage. Of the rest, FAB had a good showing with both of their teams finishing in the points.
