SAPL Interclub Round 6 - 19 June 2011 - Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club

A late charge by the host club, ESP, saw them snare three of the top four placings in Round 6. However, competition leaders Prospect managed to secure 2nd and 5th, which was enough to contain ESP's points gain to 12. This left Prospect 7 points in the clear as champions for 2010/11.

Congratulations Prospect, a well deserved victory!    pic
And your effort to rejuvenate your club and bring new people into the game has been another victory in itself and an example to the rest of us.

It was a fitting climax to a very competitive season. In the end, a change in the result of a single game would have been enough to tip the result the other way.
In the middle of the table, it was also close. Adelaide Hills fell just 6 points short of regaining third place from CPA, despite the latter scoring only 3 points for the round.
In the third group, Gawler had their best result for the season (6th place), while FAB moved up to draw equal on points with Port Noarlunga.

I'd like to thank all who participated in the competition, which was played in the best of spirits throughout. I don't believe there was a single dispute that could not be resolved amicably, through the whole season. I hope we can build on this next season (and maybe get the numbers back up a bit).

Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (19 June 2011)

SAPL Interclub Round 5 - 17 April 2011 - Club de Pétanque d' Adelaide

A truly dominant display by the host club, Adelaide, storming into third place. But they'd need to do even better to snatch the pennant after a slow start to the season...
Meanwhile, they managed to prevent Prospect from quite snuffing out a depleted ESP crew. The latter are still in touch, with the final round to be held on home turf...
The battle for the wooden spoon is hotting up too.

Prospect also hold the upper hand in the newly-installed Division II, with a small lead over Gawler. They'll be aiming for a double title, coming into Round 6.

Note the perfect correlation between number of wins and final ranking.  :-)

Cheers,
Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director (17 Apr 2011)

Coonawarra Clasic Clash Pétanque - Sat 12 & Sun 13 February 2011    results below

15th Coonawarra Vignerons Classisc Pétanque Tounament

Victorians Victorious     This year’s “Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash” Petanque Tournament was hailed a “huge success”. The Coonawarra Park was the venue for 15th annual pétanque triples tournament with fierce interstate rivalry between South Australian and Victorian teams, played in ideal conditions over the two days
This two day event run by the Coonawarra Petanque Club is becoming recognised as one of the biggest and best tournaments in Australia. With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, teams vied for over $5000 in cash and prizes, and Championship honours.
The extremely successful weekend had record numbers of entries again, with over 190 players entered, creating 64 teams in the competition, with players travelling from Melbourne, Adelaide, and regional Victoria along with a good turn out of local Coonawarra teams.
A team from the Dove Pétanque Club in Melbourne finished in top place after Saturday’s qualifying rounds, with the Coonawarra teams of: Guy Detot, Simon Fennell & Jean-Jacque Lale-Demoz; Andrew Jackman, Stuart Abbey & Grant Hetherington and Mal Redman, Deb Redman & Alistair Rowland finishing 4th, 5th and 12th respectively in the top 16 teams.
On Sunday the final rounds of the tournament were dominated by the Victorian Clubs with a spectacular Grand Final played between the St Kilda and Dove Clubs, with the team of Eric Leconte, Stephaine Langlois & Laurent Fossaert winning 13–7; finishing the weekend without losing a game.
“The Coonawarra tournament has a great atmosphere about it and the standard of the competitors is excellent. The number of people attending is a testament to the quality of this event.” said Eric Leconte from Melbourne, a regular visitor to the tournament and captain of this year’s winning team.
The high standard of play by the local Coonawarra teams was highlighted by Mal Redman, Deb Redman & Alistair Rowland having a very good weekend and being placed 3rd outright for the tournament - the best South Australian result.
Two raffles were held over the weekend, which raised $500 for the Queensland Flood Appeal and another $200 towards the Avoca Petanque Club, whose grounds and facilities were washed away by the Avoca River floods in Victoria.
“The whole weekend has been beautiful and was enjoyed by all who came along.” said Guy Detot, President Coonawarra Pétanque Club. “The influx of people for the weekend has been tremendous for the region, and we expect to see even more people coming along in the future”.

Report from Marcel Philogene, Secretary, Petanque Federation Australia - 15 November 2010

PETANQUE FEDERATION AUSTRALIA LTD

Good Morning all,

Thank you!!! Thank you!!!
To all the teams and players who participated at the week end. We beleived that the game of Pétanque was the eventual winner. Great week end of petanque and good fun was had by all present.
The competition was hot and so was the weather.
Congratulations to the winners Victoria, a team mainly composed of players from St Kilda Club, for the "All Ages" group led by Eric Leconte and duly supported by its President, Jean-Claude Dufroux. It was good to see the mother and daughter, Rymah and TatianaTerbah, combination back.
The runners up ,NSW, were not discredited.they only lost on count back.
Overall, a good solid team performances of some of the best players in Australia.Dopn't worry about the wowsers, you guys are amongst the best we have.
West Australia and Queensland were not far behind. This again prove the saying" Winning is not everything", participation is the key"

Some very noticeable improvements were to be   witnessed in the "over 60" group. Tasmania gave the other teams a good fright and a good fight. The team led by Terry Dando proved that petanque is verywell alive in the apple isle.
Looking forward to meet all of you soon on a "piste" in Tassie.

The eventual winners of that group were the guys and girls from South Australia . Led by scholar Dave Ward, it proved once again the saying"if at first you don't succeed, try and try again".
Dave reminded us in his acceptance speech , that the last time Australia beat the Kiwis was when SA represented OZ, and, he expects to do it again next year, most likely  somewhere in Victoria.
Congratulations, South Australia, congratulations to all the team.
The runner up of that group was NSW, perhaps running out of puff at the end. Ah!! well, there's always next year.

The Federation also wishes  to thank the many people who helped make this week end a success, Jackie kelly and John Fleming at the control table. Grant Threadgate did a good job as a first time Tournament Director .The many volunteers from The Eastlakes Club who kept the players well cooled with generous amount of cold water throughout these 2 usual hot November week end.
Jean Paul and Doreen Boudan could be seen running around ensuring transport , food , which I should add, very well appreciated by all.Luco and Minouche, good work.
Ray Beaumont and Monique Thibault, our Umpires for the Tournament were always there when required.
There is always a danger to miss someone when you start mentioning names. So to those we forgot to mention, a big thank you from the Petanque Federation.
Petanque Federation implemented a revised "format" for these games. The result was 50/50.
Another round of games for the "over 60" group on Saturday evening would have seen the presentation ceremony completed by 5.30pm Sunday night as programmed.
The PFA Board is quite aware that not everything was "Perfect",we have noted our perceived mistakes and look forward to hear your comments on the week end. We will take all steps necessary to improve future National Competitions.

There is still a lot to do, so until next we meet regards
Marcel Philogene

INTERCLUB FORMAT 2010/2011

NOTE! The Interclub Competition is a NON sanctioned competition.

First Round

All registered teams placed in a random draw, to determine starting position.
All teams play 5 qualifying games. No Finals. Rank is determined by number of wins, then points difference.
Top 16 teams go into Division 1 for Round 2.
Remaining teams go into Division 2.
All players score Individual points for games won.
Teams 1 to 12 score Club points. No more than two teams from a club may score points.

Rounds 2 & 3

16th 15th 14th 13th

Three qualifying games, played in pools
Top team from each pool plays for positions 1 to 4
Winner A plays Winner D, and Winner B plays Winner C (semi-finals)
Winners play for 1st. Losers play for 3rd.

NO MORE THAN TWO TEAMS FROM A CLUB MAY SCORE POINTS IN A DIVISION.

Team positions are held by the CLUB. It is up to the Club to nominate which players fill that team.
In the case of a mixed team, the nominated team Captain holds the position.
So, if players miss a round, it is up to their club to arrange where they will play in the next round.
A nominated member of the club is responsible for nominating teams to the Tournament Director before the event.
Club members who cannot form a team are to attempt to form a team with players from other clubs, but not to turn up at registration and expect the League to organise a team for them.
See Adrian for any further clarifications.

Interclub Format Adjustment no.1

(Modified 27 February 2010)

The committee of the League has approved a couple of minor adjustments to the format for State Interclub games, which will be in effect for Rounds 4,5 & 6 of the current season.
These adjustments are designed to make all matches more competitive, and ensure that club points earned are reflective of the teams’ efforts. There will still be 5 games played during the day, the first 3 games will still be in a pool of 4 and the two games after lunch will determine rank and club points. Thanks to Anthony Pietsch, of the Adelaide Hills club, for his work in putting these changes to the League.

Adrian Clements
Tournament Director

Interclub League rounds – Division 1

Morning Games

Form Pools based on results in previous round, as is done now, but arrange games in each pool as:

Game I: a v d and b v c
Game II: a v c and b v d
Game III: a v b and c v d

where a, b, c and d are the four teams in a pool, ranked from highest seed to lowest seed.

Afternoon Games

In round 4, the winner of Pool A plays the winner of Pool D, and the winner of Pool B meets the winner of C. Similarly, A2 plays D2; B2 plays C2; A3 plays D3; and so on.

In round 5, winners play winners and losers play losers (as is done now).

‘Weighted’ Ranking System

The teams which lose both round 4 and 5 games get penalised , while those that win both of the afternoon games are rewarded, as follows:

Interclub Format Adjustment no.2

Linked, are two documents relating to the format of the interclub competition.
The first, Adusted Weighting System for SAPL Interclub Competition, describes a minor adjustment to the way final rankings are assigned.
The second, Alternative System for Playing SAPL Interclub Competition, is an outline of the system to be used when there are more than 16 teams, but not enough for two divisions (i.e., less than 21 teams). This includes the overall structure that has already been used for most of the present season, plus a new way of assigning match-ups in the preliminary games based on seedings. To date, the latter has been done by a random draw.

Regards, Anthony Pietsch, SAPL Tournament Director
