Men: David Lippard (NZ), Arnaud Ernest (NSW) & Jean-Paul Bouyer finished 17th on the first day and failed to qualify for the top 16. However on Day (2) Petanque Australia discovered a mistake had been made and they should have qualified in 16th place. President's report - 2008 Petanque Australia Easter International Open

PFA logo

Melbourne 27 March 2008,

Dear members,
Our second International open is over and it was by all comments received a successful event, with a few little glitches nothing which cannot be sorted.
Our sincere congratulations must go to the organising committee for delivering a great venue and a good organisation with some great support from local members.
My personal thanks to the voluntaries that made the running of the event an easier task
The competition itself was run as per Pétanque Australia playing format but as the tournament director of the event I wasn’t given all information necessary at time as it was run on a different program with little information being made available.
I did apologise to some players who felt that they were unfairly treated by the introduction of a different scoring system (Point for instead of our usual delta system +/-), I only realised of the change once the poules were drawn and game had started.
The difference in the system was an issue for 2 teams missing out in qualification, those 2 teams having won 3 games out of their 6 qualifying games.
The lack of information provided to players was also an issue
- No published draw
- No ranking in their group
- No visual information on their poules
- No visual progression to the final
Those issues will be addressed and sorted for next year tournament.
A series of reports will be published and forwarded to all members and individual report will be forwarded to the organising committee, tournament co-ordinator, umpires and coaches by Pétanque Australia.
To all the players, officials, umpires and the organising committee thank you for your great support and understanding over the weekend.
Please find attached the results of our International Triple open in an attached document. Results will be published on PA website www.petanqueaustralia.com
Pétanque Australia at its next board meeting will fully assess the tournament and will officially announce next year venue.

Yours in pétanque,
André Deramond,
President, Pétanque Australia

In a joint venture between the Valley Petanque Club, Boules by The Lake PC and the Newcastle Petanque Club, this year's Australian Open will be held at Beresfield in the state of New South Wales.

2008 Easter Comp map

An urban village in the greater Newcastle area, Beresfield offers direct access to rural regions and wetlands off the New England Highway.

History
Beresfield and Tarro are often described as twin towns. The district remained rural until the 1920’s when it was divided and offered for residential sale in a division named Beresford. It was renamed Beresfield when the local train station changed the name to avoid confusion with a similar suburb.

The development of the area was slow until after WWII when Newcastle workers began looking for cheap land. The area became part of the City of Newcastle in 1938.

Today, the area continues to offer cheap housing which is ageing but can be redeveloped. The area is well located for employment in the near Industrial Park, south of the highway, and the Steggles factory at Sandgate.

Beresfield is located to the north west of the centre of Newcastle (30-40mins drive). The suburb is situated off the New England Highway, near the Hexham wetlands, and off the main road to Maitland.
According to the 2001 census data the combined population of the Beresfield and Tarro area is 4,586 with 1,887 dwellings.

Beresfield is within a short day trip from the coastal and fishing resorts of Port Stephens, Morpeth, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and the wine delights of the Hunter Valley vineyards.

Sport and Recreation Facilities
Beresfield has an 11 hole golf course as well as swimming, tennis and oval facilities located in Lindsay Memorial Park. Also accessible is the Tarro Recreation Area. Go to parks and playgrounds for more information about sport and recreation facilities in Newcastle (Newcastle council web site).

Transport Options
Beresfield, as the town of Tarro, has a train station that provides access to the inner city. The New England Highway also provides access to all areas of Newcastle. Otherwise fly in and out of Newcastle easily or just ...jive down the Highway.

Shops
The Beresfield and Tarro area has its commercial centre on Lawson Avenue providing a small number of mixed businesses.

More details about the competition itself will be available soon.
